It’s not often that you get to take a long vacation, but when you do, it’s always worth it.
Only recently did I discover the holy grail of optimising the benefits that come from my aromatherapy sessions. Don’t blame me for just unearthing this exhilarating experience. As the African adage rightly puts it; “whatever the time a man wakes up is when he knows it is morning”
Prior to taking my vacation, it’s been one roller coaster ride after another with my stress levels going way off the roof, and my cortisol levels creating a futile attempt to maintain my much worked at weight loss. For some, heightened stress gets the weight off like melted butter, but for people like me, it’s a different ballgame. With stress comes the weight. In my body, it’s like they were Siamese twins.
Stress is debilitating and that’s a fact!
For many who have had scary stress-related experiences, this would not come as shocking news. For the first time ever, I experienced a physical body breakdown resulting from “extreme” exhaustion. You know that feeling where the world literally stops revolving in your mental consciousness and the only questions that pop into your mind are …” Is this it?”….”Is this the moment?”…”Is it time to say goodbye?”…as your body comes sprawling to the ground and by some stroke of blessing you find yourself regaining consciousness…but in a hospital bed and the only prognosis your doctor gives you is “EXTREME EXHAUSTION”…WHAT THE BONKERS!!!. These experiences are better left imagined. At this extreme point, I knew a vacation was no longer a luxury but a necessity. I’d seen it coming! How could I not have?…with constant memory loss and inability to be mentally coherent in intellectual discourse where you’d otherwise be like the think-tank goddess.
>>>> Fast-forward to my 3 weeks vacation. I decided not to exert myself much on this vacation otherwise I’d be needing a vacation after a vacation. So, I chose to spend the first 10 days getting all the sleep my body could permit. Honestly, she sure did demand a lot of sleep. It was almost like her taking an interest on her pay cheque for every sleep currency I had deprived her over the past couple of months.
My 8-way De-stressing Regime
1 . Sleep all you can
Give sleep no mercy especially where stress is concerned. Sleep deprivation could cause more harm to your body. I have often experienced reduced metabolic action resulting from lack of sleep not to also talk about the resulting emotional irritability. If you are Abel struggling to get sleep in motion, aromatherapy could help the process along. I enjoyed the benefit of burning in an oil burner Abela by Scents of Africa Snooze Tight Synergy Blend. A variation of use could be to add a few drops of the oil in a bathtub of water with a few tablespoons of milk to aid dissolution.
2. Cut back on carbohydrate intake and eat more proteins
It is important to understand your body’s rhythm and reaction to certain foods. I hold the school of thought that all natural foods (unprocessed foods) are not bad, it’s the reaction it has in your body that makes them bad. Some people thrive on carbohydrates and others on proteins. I fall in the latter.
3. Eat a lot of fruits, nuts and vegetables.
I got a lot of my carbohydrates from vegetables and snacked on lightly salted roasted almonds. Snacking on healthy options kept my knack for the peckish life in check.
4. Take daily supplements
I thrived on taking 3 doses of evening prime rose and a dose of biotin supplements daily. NOTE: Before taking any supplements, consult your doctor. Body types and body needs vary, so what is good for Jane may not be good for Amaka or even John for that matter.
5. Treat your skin to daily oil treatments
I literally saw my face glow within 3 days of daily moisturising my face with Argan oil (the liquid gold) and Vitamin E oil. Truly amazing results. African Baobab Oil is also a great choice of oil treatment with skin regenerative properties. Trying out the Argan oil, Baobab oil & Vitamin E should be fine for most skin types, but like I would always advise consulting an esthetician or your doctor before using any supplements or treatments.
6. Take long walks to the park or anywhere for that matter
I mapped out a walking trail for myself that would require a minimum of 20 minutes walk to the park and 20 minutes walk from the park. If I was up to it, I would do this in the late morning and do another walk in the late evening. I realised how enjoyable and different the walk experience is for both walk-time slots.
7. Engage in a hobby you love very much
In spite of my enthusiasm for daily walks to the park, I wasn’t in the mood for strainful activity, so I decided on taking a book of interest to read at the park. I also found it pretty enjoyable spending a spell at the notable Barnes and Noble bookstore and experiencing that ecstatic “read all you can while you’re here” feeling. I read pretty much anything; from current affairs to health and wellness, psychology, cookbooks, arts and craft; just name it! For the most parts, I read the current affairs book “Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson and a lot of books and texts on Aromatherapy and Ayurveda wherein lies my interests.
8. Take an aromatherapy bath
This is by far my most exhilarating, mentally and emotionally rewarding of all the activities in my de-stressing regime, hence I saved it for last. Enjoying the therapeutic benefits of water and aroma was a ritual I was not going to take light hearted. I literally took my bath sessions to a whole new level with the power of natural aromatics. Every night, I filled the bathtub with warm water, added a few drops of ÀbélàTM by Scents of Africa® Pure Essence Aromatherapy Synergy Blends blends. I chose for the first few nights to use the Snooze Tight Blend to relieve me of stress-induced insomnia and switched to the Relaxation Therapy Blend on other nights to aid relaxation. My aromatherapy baths were incomplete without the allure of lighting ÀbélàTM by Scents of Africa® Soy-Beeswax Scented Candles.
That about wraps it up for my de-stressing regime on the first 10 days of my vacation. As for me, the vacation continues for a few more weeks, and I sure intend to make the best of it. So, over the next couple of weeks, I will be sharing some essential oil blends I like to whip up for an amazing Aromatherapy bath session. Until then, catch the Àbélà Fever, stay tuned in and keep well!
With loads of love,
